The Shiv Tandav Stotram (शिवताण्डवस्तोत्रम्) is a revered Sanskrit hymn describing the cosmic dance (Tandava) of Lord Shiva. It is widely celebrated for its rhythmic beauty, intense poetic meter, and powerful imagery depicting Shiva's cosmic strength, beauty, and grace.

Origin & Legend

According to Hindu mythology, the stotram was composed by Ravana, the King of Lanka and an ardent devotee of Shiva. The Story: Overcome by pride, Ravana attempted to lift Mount Kailash (the abode of Lord Shiva) to bring it to Lanka. To check his ego, Shiva pressed down on the mountain with his big toe, trapping Ravana underneath. The Hymn: Realizing his mistake and in excruciating pain, Ravana composed and sang this hymn spontaneously to seek forgiveness and glorify Shiva. Pleased by the intense devotion, music, and poetry, Shiva released him and bestowed upon him the name Ravana ("the one who roars") along with the divine sword Chandrahas.

Key Themes & Imagery

The stotram consists of 15 verses written in the Panchachamara meter, which gives it a fast, rhythmic, drum-like beat mimicking the Damaru:

The Cosmic Dance: Vividly captures Shiva performing the Rudra Tandava, accompanied by the rhythmic sound of his Damaru ("Damad-damad-damad-damad...").

Divine Form: Describes the sacred River Ganga swirling through his matted locks, the crescent moon adorning his head, the third eye blazing with cosmic fire, and serpents wrapped around his neck.

Balance of Destructive & Compassionate Power: Celebrates Shiva as both the ruthless destroyer of ignorance/evil (Tripurantaka) and the ultimate protector of all beings (Bhootanatha).
